IN THE BEGINNING….

In 1991 when I was in Baltimore giving a talk about how I create a Portrait Bear, I pulled a man from the audience and drew him as a bear.

The Cooperstown release for Sept. 2001 kicks-off a year of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the teddy bear. The premiere edition
of the BEAR LEGENDS COLLECTION, it is entitled The Oath, Celebrating 100 years of Teddy.

This piece portrays the event in which
Vice-President Roosevelt first took his Oath of Office on September 14th, 1901 in Buffalo N.Y., following the assassination of President McKinley. T.R. Portrait Bear stands on a library floor with his right paw upheld, taking the Oath of Office, in his "borrowed" clothes.

Each bear has a small piece of a vest which was truly worn by Theodore Roosevelt, sewn onto its paw.

How Bev Created the Life-size Obama bear

It all started with a trip to Germany to find the right furs.

Schulte had meters and meters of fur.

My Imagination Work-board
and pattern-making.

<<<--- Look close.

Yes!
He’s even got the wart on his nose!

Every detail was meticulous added.

<<<---

Mike made a custom wood box to ship the life-size Obama bear to Hawaii

Obama now resides in Korea's JeJu Bear Museum

We are reminded that, in the fleeting time we have on this Earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame, but rather how well we have loved and what small part we have played in making the lives of other people better.

Gus’ robe is acrylic painted canvas, replicating the design in The Kiss painting.

Emilie was carried by a lovely model
at the IDEX 2008 Fantasy Runway charity for Save The Children Foundation.

The size 6 dress, jewelry and purse were created from canvas painted with acrylics, and fit perfectly! Emilie went home with her happy new owners, who also adopted Gus.

From the beginning to the end of this long challenging project, I derived great enjoyment in merging my love of making bears, with unique clothing design and painting artwork.
It just doesn't get any better than that!

Behind the scenes
How some of these creations were made by Bev.

Bev and The Kiss

The painting is started

2007 - The Kiss - Parody

On the 100th Anniversary of Klimpts Kiss a 3’x4’ OOAK

1907 The Kiss by Gustav Klimpt
The original oil painting was 6’x 6’ tall and painted during his “Golden Period”.

Selecting the colors, fabrics and accessories.

This museum commission was created using acrylic painting on stretched canvas and a trapunto technique to create the bears
in low-relief with mohair fabric.

How Van Gogh's Sunflower Parady was created.

The Van Gogh Sunflowers Parody is a bouquet of 15 different mohair bear faces, with glass eyes and embroidered noses.

They are set into the flower centers of one of Van Gogh’s famous Sunflower pictures.

After completing an acrylic painted backdrop, silk flower petals
were incorporated, before attaching the three dimensional fabric faces, set at the various angles of the underlying flowers
